Recently displaced Ukrainians will be the recipients of a pair of benefits from the provincial government.
The government announced that families are now eligible through the Canada Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel for income support benefits to help with the cost of raising children under age 18.
This is an expansion of the Canada Child Benefit, which is not provided to families until they’ve lived in Canada for 18 months.
“There is currently a lengthy delay and additional requirements imposed on displaced Ukrainians arriving under CUAET by the federal government before they can access the federal Canada Child Benefit,” Makowsky said in a news release “This adds hardship for Ukrainian families…”
And the province is also providing tuition free education for displaced, school-aged Ukrainian students, through till Grade 12.
More than 400 students from Ukraine are registered in Saskatchewan’s schools through the emergency travel program.
“Providing tuition-free education for these students is an essential step to ensuring these newcomers are able to settle as easily and comfortably as possible,” said Education minister Dustin Duncan in a media release.
