Regina’s RCMP Heritage Centre announced they will be the host of a special production of “The Trial of Louis Riel”.
The play, celebrating its 55th Anniversary is the longest-running historical drama in North America.
Education Facilitator Debbie Le Dressay says she hopes this is the first step towards Regina being the play’s permanent home, adding the city’s historic significance is a big factor.
“Of course, Louis Riel was hung right next door at Depot, so there’s that piece of history,” said Le Dressay. “Also, within our galleries here, we still are housing some of the Louis Riel artifacts.”
Le Dressay says she believes the opportunity to host the play will serve as a good step towards reconciliation.
“It’s telling a story,” said Le Dressay. “That’s part of what our mandate here is, to tell the story of the RCMP, and also tell the story of Canadian history.”
Not only does the play serve as a sort of entertainment, but Le Dressay also says it’s a valuable history lesson.
“The more you can learn about Canadian history, and the different stories that go with that, the more knowledge you have that helps you understand everybody and the diversity of who we are as Canadians.”
The show will have a series of matinee and evening performances over the course of two weekends, July 23rd-25th, and July 30th to August 1st. Show times can be found on their website.
