Regina is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week in the city.
Prevention week was started in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association.
“This year’s theme is ‘fire won’t wait, plan your escape’. We wanted to make sure that families worked on having two ways out of every room in their house and had a meeting place once they were out of the home where they could call 911,” says Dustin McCullough, Deputy Chief of Regina Fire.
The Regina Fire stations have hosted multiple events throughout the week teaching people about services that the fire departments offer as well as the importance of having an escape plan for every person living or staying in a residence.
“It’s important to have an escape plan for everyone in your home, including older adults, children, guests, and pets,” says Fire Chief Layne Jackson.
“Every home and every family is different, so it’s important that your plan is specific to your situation. If a family member with disabilities needs assistance to escape, plan how to help them out. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds.”
For their final event for Fire Prevention Week, Fire Station #5 at 2700 East Arens Road is hosting an open house on Saturday, October 15.
“Families will be able to come to the fire station and take a look at the trucks. We will be discussing and making sure families have an escape plan for their house. There’s a few exercises that they can do. There will be a smoke tunnel set up for the kids to crawl through,” says McCullough.
