The sports world lost a great fan this week.
Known for his colourful wigs and long, painted beard, Yorkton’s Hans Madsen was a staple at Curling events across the country, especially in Saskatchewan.
CURLSASK Executive Director Ashley Howard says everyone has a story with Hans, including her.
“Somehow, I was nicknamed ‘Smiley’ by Hans, and I think the reason is that when I looked at him, I smiled,” Howard said. “He brought that happiness to our entire sport, and we were so lucky to have him, (he was) a fantastic fan and ambassador for our game. He will be truly missed.”
Kirk Muyres, who is currently the second for Matt Dunstone’s rink, recalled seeing Hans and his wife Judy at the 2020 SaskTel Tankard in Melville.
“I remember when we lost the last provincial final to Dunstone before I played with him, we were leaving the ice and they made sure that they came over and consoled us before we left the ice,” Muyres said. “They were the first ones there to make sure that (we) knew they were there to support us and be our friends.”
Madsen passed away Wednesday at the age of 71 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was also known to frequent SJHL games and WCBL games in Yorkton and Melville.
