Number 1’s at 1 – Dec 30 | 620 CKRM - The Voice of Saskatchewan

Hey there, it’s Cody filling in for Colin Lovequist this week on Number 1’s at 1! He’s busy planning a very special edition of Number 1’s for New Year’s Eve starting at 7pm.

Looking back at 1973, the Sears Tower in Chicago was completed with 108 floors and standing 1729 feet making it the tallest building in the world for 25 years! The US began withdrawing troops from Vietnam, the Watergate hearings captivated North Americans, Princess Ann married Captain Mark Phillips, and it was this week back in 1973 when Charlie Rich reached number 1 on the country album chart with “Behind Closed Doors.”

While Charlie Rich was enjoying the number 1 spot, Merle Haggard started his second week at number 1 with a song from an album that he never considered pure Christmas because the subject of economics was explored. “If We Make it Through December” was the album and the title track was the number 1 song, which stayed at the top for four weeks until January 19th.

In 1986 Paulette Carlson, Jack Daniels, Curtis Stone, and Scott “Cactus” Moser joined together in Los Angeles and formed the group Highway 101. Carlson was already doing solo gigs and the others were session musicians. If you’ve ever watched the comedy “Back to School” with Rodney Dangerfield you’ll see Stone and Moser in the movie playing members in a bar band! Highway 101 went on to have a successful run in 1980’s and they landed their final number 1 hit on this day in 1989 with “Who’s Lonely Now,” which stayed at the top for 2 weeks.

Looking back at the end of of 1981 and the start of 1982, Alabama was in the middle of a two week ride at number 1 on the country chart with their fifth consecutive chart topper and their third single from their “Feels So Right” album. “Love in the First Degree” ended up becoming the band’s most successful cross over hit, getting to #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart of 1982.

Clint Black started his second week at number 1 on the country albums chart on this day in 1998 with “Put Yourself in My Shoes.” From that album came the number 1 hit “Loving Blind.”

Dallas Smith had the number 1 selling song closing out 2013 with Tippin Point.

The late Skeeter Davis would have turned 88 today. Sadly, we lost Davis in 2004.
