Coming up on today’s edition of Number 1’s at 1:
Johnny Cash hit number one on the country albums chart and the country singles chart simultaneously on this day in 1968 with the Folsom Prison Blues live version. The song would go on to get him a Grammy Award in 1969 for best male country vocal performance.
Lee Greenwood found himself at number 1 on this day in 1985 with a song that was first recorded by King Edward IV and the Knights back in 1981. It only got to #48 on the Billboard chart for them, but Lee Greenwood would drive “Dixie Road” to number one for one week in July of 1985, giving him his third career number one.
1990’s country group Ricochet landed their first and only number one on this day in 1996 with “Daddy’s Money.”
Conway Twitty reached number this week in 1975 with “Touch the Hand.”
Congratulations to Medicine Hat’s MacKenzie Porter who landed her third consecutive number one in this country TODAY! She is the first Canadian female artist to achieve this since Shania Twain back in 1998. “Seeing Other People” tops the country charts this week in Canada.
And we’ll celebrate a few birthdays on today’s show. T.G. Sheppard turns 75, songwriter Kim Carnes turns 75, and Radney Foster is 61 today.
Kenny Chesney started his third and final week at number on the Country Albums chart on this day in 2012 with “Welcome to the Fishbowl,” his 14th studio album. The name of the album came from a conversation he had with some football friends. The number one song from the album was “Come Over” which hit the top in August of 2012 and stayed there for two weeks.
