A crew from the Globe Theatre has spent the last year and a half building and creating a live play in tribute to former Roughrider George Reed.
It’s more than safe to say that George Reed is a name many Saskatchewan people know and love. Reed is considered a legend as he was an elite football player for the Roughriders but he was also an advocate and a humanitarian who was a part of over 40 different charities.
His inspiring life has been crafted into a live play written by Munish Sharma and opening night is tonight (Wednesday).
The production will take the audience on an incredible journey highlighting Reed’s groundbreaking career, his move to the prairies, and how he won over the community.
Footage and game highlights from his record-breaking career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders will give audiences a view from the 55-yard line.
#34 was commissioned by the Globe Theatre to coincide with the 2022 Grey Cup that’s happening in Regina in just a couple of weeks.
“It’s about resilience, it’s about heart, it’s about sport, it’s about moving forward when things are the most difficult. It’s about citizenship, active citizenship, and I think that’s George Reed’s gift to this community,” says Judy Wensel, director of the play.
It’s rumoured that George Reed himself is expected to make an appearance at the opening show.
