The future of the Extendicare facilities was discussed during Thursday’s Question Period at the Legislative assembly
The SHA assumed the responsibilities as administrators for the long term care services at the five Extendicare facilities in the province earlier this year.
Minister Responsible for Seniors Everett Hindley says the government is undergoing an evaluation process. “Our priority remains the residents and making sure that they have the best possible care in these facilities and across Saskatchewan, I’m not sure how long that process will take, it will take some time I’m sure.”
Based on the review from the Ombudsman report along with the findings from the SHA, Hindley says the government will not looking towards a new contract with Extendicare. “It’s fairly clear that this was not working particularly well here in Saskatchewan, based on that I don’t think that would be something we would be looking at.”
The provincial opposition are hoping to see a commitment from the province that for profit care has come to an end in Saskatchewan.
Opposition Critic Matt Love says the profit for care services have led to some unfortunate situations. “We’ve seen for-profit care present a deadly set of circumstances for residents both here in Saskatchewan and around Canada, certainly looking for a commitment from the minister that we’ve seen the evidence for-profit care is bad for seniors and has no place in our province.”
