WorkSafe Saskatchewan is urging workers and homeowners about the dangers of asbestos by sharing the story of a man who has been affected by it.
Wade Dieno, a resident of Chitek Lake, spent his work life in the trades working in Saskatchewan mines for decades before calling it a career in 2017.
Soon after he retired, he was diagnosed with stage three mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs and chest wall often caused by asbestos, in November of last year and was given 12 to 14 months to live.
Dieno says it has changed his life night and day.
“It’s not a pleasant thing, and you go from living a wonderful life and your retirement, to putting the skids on,” said Dieno, “You’re going nowhere now.”
He’s trying to make the best of whatever time he has left to tell his story and prevent workers from making the same mistakes he did.
