The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association is pushing the Moe government to accept a proposal from Ottawa to improve Agri-Stability.
Federal Agriculture Minister Marie Claude Bibeau proposed to increase the compensation rate under AgriStability from the current 70 percent, up to 80 percent.
As well, the reference margin would be removed.
The problem for smaller population provinces like Saskatchewan is the cost.
Cattlemen’s Association chair Arnold Balicki is hoping the province will go ahead with the proposal.
He says the livestock industry would welcome improvements to farm business risk programs.
He says the benefit would outweigh the cost.
Agriculture Minister David Marit said there will be discussions amongst the provincial cabinet, with a decision expected sometime this month.
