A number of cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Yorkton.
Mayor Bob Maloney notes one case is a front-line officer at the RCMP detachment and 14 additional officers are in self-isolation.
“Our force will be reaching out if they need help, they will be calling in support for us, so while we are down a number of officers, they will backfill for us and I’ve got no real concerns in that area,” Maloney said. “We will of course be doing a deep-cleaning of the RCMP home at city hall, that’s already underway.”
Maloney says despite the new cases, no additional measures will be implemented at this time.
“When you get into a virus that is so easily transferrable as this one appears to be, there are always those concerns, wherever people gather is a concern,” Maloney said. “We would just encourage business and encourage people to do all of the right things — we all know what they are now, it’s not a mystery — do the right things, and be as safe as you can.”
Instead, Maloney urges residents to take their own necessary precautions.
“We have cases in the city of Yorkton and we want to keep a handle on it, so if you’re going to a public place, do the right thing and wear a mask,” Maloney said. “If you’re working in your backyard, you don’t have to, but for the 20 minutes that I’m grocery shopping, it seems like a small price to pay.
“Essentially, what you’re doing is protecting workers at that store that are there through everybody coming through.”
Cases have also been identified at the Yorkton Regional High School, the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, and the Pumphouse Athletic Club.
