Round one of the battle of Saskatchewan was a one-sided affair.
The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) Huskies (2-0) defeated the University of Regina (U of R) Rams (0-1) 40-6 on Friday night at Griffiths Stadium.
It was a quick start by the Huskies, who scored on their first three possessions to jump out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter.
Huskies QB Anton Amundrud found WR Branson Pipko for a 12-yard touchdown to open the scoring on their opening drive.
Amundrud would then connect with WR Rhett Varva for three unanswered touchdowns as the Huskies jumped out to a commanding lead.
The U of S would extend their lead to 31 before the end of the first half with a David Solie field goal.
For the second straight week, the Rams lone touchdown would come from a run by QB Noah Pelletier, as the U of R opened the scoring in the third quarter.
The Huskies would put the game away in the fourth quarter with a five-yard touchdown run by Ted Kubongo.
For the Rams, Pelletier finished 20 for 37 with 218 passing yards with three interceptions.
D’Sean Mimbs led the green and gold receivers with four catches for 83 yards.
DB Max Polischuk had six tackles for the Rams while Jackson Sombach had their lone interception.
For the Huskies, Amundrud finished with 391 passing yards and four touchdown passes and one interception.
Varva led receivers with six catches for 130 yards and three touchdowns.
Following the game, Rams Head Coach Mark McConkey said his team wasn’t prepared for the Huskies attack at the beginning of the game.
But added he liked the response in the second half.
“We battled, we got first downs, our defence got off the field, we just got ourselves in too big of a hole early and just weren’t able to dig ourselves out of it.”
The Rams will try and pick up their first win of the season on home turf next Saturday when they meet the University of Calgary Dinos (0-1).
