A monument to honor those who lost their lives and continue to suffer from the impact of residential schools will be erected at Government House.
Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty and Premier Scott Moe made the announcement in a news release this morning, saying the construction of a permanent monument is a response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action.
The Lieutenant Governor will be speaking with residential school survivors, their families and Indigenous elders throughout the winter, and construction details will be shared following that process.
The residential school system operated in Canada for over 100 years, with at least 150,000 Indigenous children removed or separated from their families and communities to attend the schools. About 20 of the federal residential schools operated in Saskatchewan from the 1880s to the 1990s.
