Two Regina families are on the brink of gaining access to new Habitat for Humanity homes, thanks in part to $130,000 in investments from the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan.
Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Gene Makowsky, alongside representatives from Habitat for Humanity and Mayor Sandra Masters, officially announced the construction of these homes to support families in need.
“We recognize that safe and affordable housing contributes to the health and well-being of everyone in our province,” Makowsky said. “Our government continues to work with the Government of Canada through the National Housing Strategy to meet our commitment to support people and families in greatest housing need.”
Habitat Saskatchewan Interim Executive Director Kelsey Stewart said these homes are turning dreams into a reality for a pair of families.
“This event symbolizes our unwavering commitment to building hope, homes, and communities. It marks the beginning of a journey toward a brighter future for families, fueled by the support and partnership of our community. I am honoured to be part of this next chapter for our affiliate, where our collective actions demonstrate our commitment to making affordable housing accessible to everyone.”
The announcement signals a significant milestone for the two Regina families, as they will soon realize their dream of homeownership. Each single-family home spans two stories and sits on land donated through an anonymous contribution.
Residents are expected to move into their new homes in the summer of 2024.
“It is fantastic to see their building program back in action in Regina – extending the opportunity of home ownership to folks throughout our city,” Mayor Sandra Masters said.
Funding for each home includes $65,000 from the Saskatchewan Priorities component of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Saskatchewan Bi-Lateral Agreement under the National Housing Strategy (NHS).
Additionally, upon occupancy, each home will receive $15,000 from the City of Regina.
