Canada’s two main railways highlight record January grain movement

CP Rail is reporting record grain movement in January.

CP Rail says 2.2 million tons of grain were shipped last month, surpassing last years record in January by six percent.

Since August first, CP Rail has shipped 16 million metric tons of grain this crop year, surpassing the previous year by more than 13 percent.

CP says it has added more than 38 hundred new hopper cars this year.

The new cars carry 15 percent more grain by volume and ten percent more by weight compared to the older cars they are replacing.

Last month, CN Rail moved over 2.95 million tons, 27 percent higher than last January’s previous record.

So far this crop year, CN has moved 17.5 million metric tons, 17 percent higher than the record set two years ago.

Since 2018, CN has invested over 10 billion dollars in track, locomotives and rail cars, including the purchase of over 2,500 high capacity grain hopper cars.
