Environment Canada has issued a series of severe thunderstorm watches for southern Saskatchewan with the expectation being those watches will be upgraded to warnings as the day goes along.
Terri Lang with the weather office says conditions are perfect for severe weather to hit the province today with some thunderstorms having occurred already in the province’s southwest. She says while severe thunderstorms with lightning, hail, heavy rain and strong winds expected, it is tough to pinpoint just where the worst could be.
“We are expecting severe weather, but we can’t identify each and every community that will get hit.” Lang said. “I equate it to watching a pot boil and forecasting where the first bubble will come up and then the next one and so on.”
She does advise people to keep an eye on the sky especially if on the highway and to take the necessary precautions if a storm should go over top of you. She reminds people lightning kills and injures more Canadians every year than what tornadoes do.
The storm system is expected to hit the Regina area mid-afternoon with a second band of storms rolling through during the evening.
