A spokesperson for the gang diversion group STR8UP says there has been enough talk about how to reduce crime and get a handle on addictions, and now it’s time to take action.
Shane Partridge says one simple thing that could be done is to make sure there are youth services available in the evening in the neighbourhoods that need them. He says a youth drop-in centre would solve so much, and it’s time to invest in the community and the people that live in these communities.
The NDP is calling on the provincial government to address the factors fueling crime, leaving some people feeling unsafe in their homes. Ryan Meili gives the example of the increase in shootings in Regina and several recent homicides in Saskatoon.
He would like to see a provincial crime strategy that addresses the causes of crime, like poverty, addictions and the marginalization of Indigenous people. The NDP is also advocating for dedicated mental health emergency facilities, so people can get the appropriate help for drug addictions and drug psychosis in a timely fashion, rather than filling up waiting rooms in Emergency Departments.
