The Regina Police Service says a 32-year-old man is facing charges after officers had to deploy a Taser three times to arrest the individual.
Officers were sent on Tuesday at 11:00 p.m. to a home on the 1500 block of Victoria Avenue after a call to a disturbance at the residence. Police were told there was “continued loud screaming” coming from the home.
When officers arrived, they spoke with a man at the door who acknowledged there was a disagreement at the house. The man refused to let police enter the home after the officers asked so they could make sure everyone in the home was okay. Police learned soon after that the man was the subject of warrants and a probation order.
Patrol members attempted to arrest him, however he broke away, picked up a stereo and threw it at one of the officers. A second officer deployed a Taser, which was temporarily effective. The suspect continued to resist arrest and was physically combative with police, which prompted officers to taser the individual two more times.
During the struggle between police and the suspect, the other occupant of the residence, a 51-year-old man, came up from the basement; he was confirmed to be unhurt as a result of the original disturbance.
More officers arrived and assisted in getting the suspect safely into custody. He was medically cleared before being taken to police detention.
Regina Police laid charges of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, resisting arrest and break of probation on 32-year-old Prince Derek Shepherd of Regina. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon in Regina.
