A newly passed sign bylaw from Regina city council has one group in the city wanting to fight the decision.
The Regina Portable Sign Association is not happy about Bylaw 2920 that puts restrictions and regulations on where portable signs can be placed throughout the city.
Doug Hudgin with the association said who will be affected by this decision.
“Portable signs being the most cost-effective advertising available for small business, local business, or any business for that matter,” Hudgin said. “As for the meeting (Tuesday) night, it was very disappointing, we’re extremely disappointed in the result.”
Hudgin was one of the delegates at the meeting. He talks about the next steps with this matter.
“The best thing for us to do is lobby the province to perhaps say ‘no, you can’t do this,’ or ‘parts of it you cannot do,’” Hudgin said. “From there, I guess we’ll see what steps have to be taken after that.
“Our memberships certainly does not want to end up in a court battle.”
Some Councillors stated that the bylaw is needed to help remove the clutter of signage found in different parts of the city or concerns that too many signs in one location may be distracting to drivers.
Hudgin doesn’t think that’s the case.
“We’re not responsible for the clutter; we’re the easiest target and we’re the most convenient target, so that’s the reality as we speak.”
Advertisements such as bus benches and shelters are not touched by the proposed bylaw.
If accepted by the province, the bylaw would take effect in 30 days following approval.
