Buying on line is not for everyone. The cruel reality is that people have chosen to purchase on line and it appears to be taking a bite out of the retail business in Saskatchewan, the whole of Canada really. Some of the places I have always enjoyed are wrapping up their businesses in Regina and the province including: The Bay within the Cornwall Centre, Cleo’s, Ricki’s and Bootlegger. And if retail locations aren’t closing they are moving to different properties. Could be better parking, lower rent and looking for higher traffic.
The use of on line shopping has to be a big reason for the change in the retail landscape, but I still believe in being able to see and feel what you are buying. We are all built differently, the time and money it takes to return items via mail or other shipping methods is not for everyone. This especially rings true if you need a garment within a short period of time and it needs alterations. Do you want to wait for it to be shipped? Not likely.
Retail therapy is relaxing, frustrating and can be a ton of fun! Recently, I have observed those times when youth are out shopping with their moms. They are just at the age where they are unsure about what to wear keeping modesty and a level of cool in mind. I think we can all appreciate that moment. Again being able to see all the options, trying them on to see how they fit, so important. When I go shopping, I have had the fortune of having store employees help with choices, offering suggestions in colour choice and changing out sizes. It is all part of the experience that you don’t get scanning through a website. Even if the info says model is 5’9″ size 8, what does that really mean! Trying things on gives you a) the reality check of what you see in the mirror and b) does this item really suit you and c) do I need it or not!
This weekend on a fact finding mission to Peavy Mart, I wanted to see for myself if the Regina was indeed closing. There were no big signs announcing that closure is imminent. No obvious clearances, just some sales. and empty shelves. This could have indicated that either orders had not come in or they wouldn’t be filled. Peavy Mart screams serving the rural community with clothing, pet food and feed and supplements for livestock, stock paneling, chicken coops and rabbit hutches, gardening tools and seeds. The store covered off so many items on your list. Who will take up this banner once the store is closed. Regina employees indicate that the store will be open for up to the next 8 months, so all is not lost. It is however lost on those that work at these stores and will soon need to find other jobs in an already competitive work force.
