REGINA — Saskatchewan Roughriders’ quarterback Trevor Harris didn’t take long to get down to the meat of the matter during his latest interview on The SportsCage.
Specifically, his carnivore-based diet.
Harris explained his rather unique eating habits — mostly meat and protein-based foods with some fruit and dairy.
“It’s something I like to tinker with. I’ve done the whole foods diet, I’ve done the paleo, I tried the vegan, it lasted about 24 hours and I was like: ‘Nah, bro.,” Harris said with a laugh. “The only vegetables I’ve eaten so far are sweet potatoes. It’s a wild diet, but I’m having tons of fun with it and it’s a blast.”
Whatever Harris’ nutritional intake looks like at the moment, it’s working, as the 38-year-old pivot is healthy and hale while preparing for training camp. That is also in no small part due to his ongoing workout routine, which also sees him working with and acting as a mentor to young quarterbacks.
“There’s a kid around here that I work with and instead of actually training him, he’s training with me,” Harris said in describing a typical offseason day, adding that they hit the YMCA at 6:15 a.m. in the morning and work on throwing, footwork and mechanics until around 7:30 a.m.
From there, it’s off for a session with an accelerated recovery performance wave machine, and by 9 a.m., both his workouts for the day are in the bag.
“Then it’s time to watch a little film, do some brain training, that sort of thing. Rest of the day, I get to be dad,” said Harris, a father of three with a fourth on the way.
Working with the up-and-coming quarterbacks has also been a benefit when it comes to preparing himself for the games ahead.
“It’s a great way for me to reinforce mechanics and teach them what I’m applying to myself,” Harris said. “It’s been a really fun time doing that this offseason.”
Harris has naturally kept an eye on how the team’s free agency process has been going. It’s safe to say he’s impressed with what he’s seen from general manager Jeremy O’Day.
“People talk about all the additions on all these teams, that they’re buying these players, but continuity is a pretty awesome word to have,” he said.
“We had nine all stars and nine are returning. On top of that, Jamarcus Hardrick is one of the best o-linemen that we have in the Canadian Football League — he’s gonna be healthy. A.J. Ouelette is gonna be healthy for a full season. Sam Emilus is back, [Kian] Schaffer-Baker is back, KeeSean Johnson’s back, Dohnte Meyers is gonna be back. We got a slew of guys that are coming back to play and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way our team shaped up.”
Harris also pointed out that if players have been signed from other teams as free agents, there would be a state of elation in Rider Nation — and instead of having to get familiar with a bunch of new players, all that is already there.
“I’d say we’re a few weeks ahead of the curve,” Harris said. “The core group of guys have all played together, so continuity is the word of the year to me… the best teams I’ve played on have been the closest ones. I’m in contact all the time with the receivers, especially Sam, where I’m constantly arguing MJ and LeBron. We have all kinds of fun and we have good relationships.”
