SGI’s traffic safety focus for September was speeding in school zones, and 673 people were caught.
The insurance company’s Tyler McMurchy says it resulted in some stiff fines.
“The most important reason to not speed in school zones is not to avoid one of those tickets, it’s to avoid a collision that might hurt a pedestrian,” McMurchy said. “Of course pedestrians in school zones tend to be kids.”
McMurchy says 451 people were caught driving while impaired.
“While we have seen strong enforcement of impaired driving in the past number of years in Saskatchewan, I think the last few months really reflect that strong enforcement when you see four out of the last five months, police have caught more than 400 impaired drivers.”
As well, 660 tickets were handed out for distracted driving, almost 7,000 for speeding and aggressive driving, and 414 for seatbelt infractions.
The numbers from September due to the provincial election being called Sept. 29.
