The Saskatchewan government has announced a 90 thousand dollar grant to support research at the University of Saskatchewan on the spread of chronic wasting disease.
The research will also cover spread of meningeal worm in woodland caribou and other similar species.
The study will use state of the art radio collars and trail cameras, enabling the research team to better understand animal movements and develop a disease transmission model.
The results will enable the Environment ministry to develop science-based management actions to ensure conservation of woodland caribou and their habitat.
Environment minister Dana Skoropad says these diseases put the long-term survival of woodland caribou and other boreal species at serious risk and the research is important.
