With the recent Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the current Tim Hortons Brier being played without fans in a Calgary bubble, the lack of fans has been apparent.
While there are cardboard cutouts in the seats at the Markin McPhail Centre, the atmosphere is different than what it normally is as the fans that make these events what they are just aren’t there.
With that being the case, the town that helped the Matt Dunstone rink get ready for the Brier is now making a request to the Saskatchewan curling community.
Scott Comfort is the general manager and icemaker at the Wadena Remax Curling Club. He says the call is being made for Saskatchewan to show its support for the Dunstone foursome by wearing green on Wednesday and then going to social media.
“I know a lot of people in our town will be wearing green using the hashtags #smalltownproud and #gosask and that it will be sent to the boys to show them that everyone is cheering for them not only in Wadena, but hopefully across the province.”
Wadena is where the rink went to practice as an offer was made to them before the Brier started to come do their thing. It was a move that no one really wanted to publicize so not many knew it was happening.
“Just the curling club board and a couple of other people knew about what was happening.” Comfort said. ‘Most of the town didn’t know they were here, but once word filtered out, meals and other things started showing up which is something the guys were very appreciative of.”
As curling fans in Saskatchewan know, the province has not had a Brier champ since Rick Folk in 1980.
