SGI is reminding drivers to slow down in school zones this month with their traffic safety spotlight.
In Regina, the new school zone is 30 km/h from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, but all cities and towns across the province have their own school zones drivers need to be aware of.
SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy said it’s important to follow the rules of the road, but especially in school zones.
“At 30 km/h, you are going reasonably slow, and you should see anything that comes in your path if you are paying attention,” McMurchy said. “That’s another reason why we tell people it’s important to avoid distractions as you’re travelling through school zones; put down the phone, don’t pay attention to the coffee or the kids making noise in the backseat.”
Saskatchewan School Boards Association President Shawn Davidson said every year there are some accidents in school zones across the province.
“Ultimately, kind of like how Workers Compensation Board talks about ‘Mission: Zero,’ we would certainly like to see ‘Mission: Zero’ be our goal, and anything that’ll enhance that is good news for the school boards of the province.”
SGI says anyone going over the speed limit in a school zone by 20 km/h will face a $310 ticket and three demerit points.
