Swift Current Municipal RCMP is warning the public about a potentially dangerous illicit drug circulating in the area following three recent overdose-related incidents.
On Tuesday, officers responded to three separate calls involving individuals suffering from symptoms of overdose. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. In response, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has issued an overdose alert.
RCMP say a purple powder, reportedly being sold locally as molly (MDMA), may be involved. While this substance has been seen in the region before, investigators believe this batch may be contaminated with an unknown opioid. The exact composition of the drug is not yet confirmed.
The Swift Current RCMP and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service continue to investigate.
Police remind the public that an overdose is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if one occurs. Naloxone, which reverses the effects of opioid overdoses, is carried by first responders.
Under the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, individuals who seek emergency help during an overdose have some legal protections.
Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers
