This weekend will be a busy one for thousands of Saskatchewanians thanks to events like Country Thunder Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Roughriders game on Friday, Wood Mountain Stampede, and the Big Flat Folk Festival in Eastend, SK.
Saturday and Sunday will also be a free fishing weekend for angling enthusiasts of Saskatchewan. The first free fishing weekend started 36 years ago as way to encourage residents of the province to explore the many lakes, rivers, and diverse fishing opportunities of Saskatchewan. In 2015 a free ice fishing weekend was incorporated.
In a press release, Environment Minister Travis Keisig said “Saskatchewan is renowned for its world class sportfishing and we encourage everyone to enjoy a truly remarkable experience.”
The free fishing weekend takes place on July 12th and 13th and doesn’t require anglers to have a fishing license, however possession limits remain in effect and fish cannot be transported across the provincial borders without a license. The free fishing weekend does not take place in Saskatchewan’s national parks.
After this weekend, anglers will need a fishing license which sells for $42/year for those ages 16 to 64. A three day fishing license for Saskatchewan residents is $21 and a one day license is $15. Seniors over the age of 65, those under the age of 16, and Canadian Armed Forces veterans do not have to pay for a license.
