Thanks to digital streaming services nowadays we’re able to get our favourite shows on demand and our favourite movies at the click of a button. Getting what we want instantly has never been easier than it is now and, thanks to a Japanese company, people can now rent a grandmother.
A company that is well known for providing an unusual array of convenience services has now got into the rent-a-grandma service for those who need a little one-on-one grandmother time. Thanks to the OK Grandmother Service, customers can rent a senior between the ages of 60 and 94 for 3,300 Yen per hour ($30 Canadian/hr) but only after they specify what their needs are. There is a process in place by the company to find the right senior for the needs of the customer. For example, they have grandmothers who specialize in cooking, some are house cleaners or babysitters, and they even have a few who are just good at listening for those customers who just need someone to talk to.
So far over 100 seniors have signed up to be grandmothers for strangers since the program launched in 2012 and, according to the company, it’s one of their most popular services. One customer even rented a senior for her wedding because she didn’t have enough relatives and just wanted a “grandma” there for her nuptials.
Not only do clients have to pay the base fee, they also have to provide transportation and cover any necessary costs of the senior while out together.
