ESTEVAN — A preliminary hearing date has been finalized for Tyler Neil Shaw, nearly 15 months after he was charged in connection with the death of Briana Hayes in Oxbow.
The inquiry, which will determine if the case will go to trial, has been set for Feb. 4-6, 2026, in Carlyle Provincial Court. Shaw is charged with one count of being an accessory to murder after the fact.
Shaw’s attorney, Darren Kraushaar, noted dates had been reserved in January 2026 for the hearing, but they learned the proposed dates were not available. Shaw has elected for a Court of King’s Bench judge and jury trial.
The co-accused in the matter, Taylor Morgan Japp, had his preliminary hearing in June and the case was moved to Court of King’s Bench at that time. Japp is charged with second-degree murder.
Shaw also has a number of charges remaining in provincial court. Those matters were adjourned to Aug. 18 for resolution discussions.
Background: On April 24, 2024, the Carlyle RCMP received a report of a possible homicide. The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit took control of the investigation. Hayes’ body was found April 25 in a rural location in the RM of Moose Mountain.
Shaw was arrested and charged, and was out on conditions in connection with Hayes’ death when he was arrested in late March 2025 for driving while over .08 and impaired driving. He was also charged with multiple counts of violating the conditions of his release order.
Shaw had a show-cause hearing April 23 in Regina Provincial Court. Bail was granted and he was released from custody with conditions.
