I have a confession to make: I can’t stop painting rocks. Yes, you read that right—rock painting has become my absolute favorite hobby, and I owe it all to a friend who got me hooked during a recent camping trip. She pulled out a bag of smooth pebbles and a few bright paints, and before I knew it, I was lost in a world of creativity.
Now when I see a rock, my first thought is “oh that would be fun to paint!” At the Northwest Roundup I saw so many
perfectly smooth rocks after being pounded down by big trucks and trailers, horse hooves, carts, and water trucks. Yes, I was that person picking up rocks and putting them in my purse. I’m sure I looked a sight, scouring the ground for the perfect canvas!
And forget flowers and smiley faces. Lately, my masterpieces feature the likes of Stitch and Leroy (because who doesn’t want a little alien chaos on their coffee table?), the infamous Chicken Jockey from Minecraft (yes, that’s a skeleton riding a chicken—try explaining that to your grandma), and the entire Teen Titans squad. Because if you’re going to paint, go big or go home, right? Let’s not forget Grizzy and the Lemmings. Ever tried squeezing a dozen hyperactive blue lemmings onto a pebble? It’s basically a test of artistic skill and patience (emphasis on the patience).
But hey, the results are equal parts ridiculous and adorable. I’ll be honest—sometimes I look at my growing collection and wonder if I’ve crossed over into “eccentric rock hoarder” territory. But then my children’s excitement and smiles when they see my latest creation, makes me want to keep right on painting.
