Saskatchewan RCMP has referred an in-custody injury to the province’s Serious Incident Response Team after two men were arrested following a series of incidents in Yorkton last week.
On September 17, around 4:50 p.m., Yorkton RCMP received a report of theft at a store on Broadway Street. Police say a man was throwing rocks at a store employee when another male joined him before both fled the scene.
Minutes later, officers were alerted to two men matching the same description, allegedly throwing rocks at dogs and threatening a witness with bear spray. Police tracked the pair and one man ran into a grassy area.
RCMP say that while officers pursued one of the suspects he was struck by a police vehicle and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The RCMP says the Serious Incident Response Team will oversee the investigation. A separate internal investigation has also been launched.
As a result of the investigation, a 22-year-old man faces three charges, including possession of property obtained by crime, uttering threats and resisting arrest.
He is scheduled to appear in Yorkton court on October 27.
The second suspect, a 20-year-old man from Yorkton, was arrested without incident later that day while officers were investigating another complaint.
He faces seven charges, including theft under $5,000, assault, uttering threats and assault with a weapon.
The 20-year-old was remanded into custody and appeared in Yorkton court on September 23.
