MOOSOMIN — A major infrastructure project aimed at securing safe drinking water and supporting future growth has officially opened in Moosomin.
On Wednesday, Premier Scott Moe joined local officials, stakeholders and community members to celebrate the grand opening of the community’s new water treatment plant and raw water supply line.
The upgrades included replacing the raw water supply main, installing a new treatment facility, and changing out all commercial and residential water meters. The new 6,400-square-foot plant is equipped with reverse osmosis filtration membranes and modernized filters to improve water quality.
The $13.5-million project was funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The federal government contributed more than $5.4 million, with the province adding over $4.5 million. The Town of Moosomin covered the remaining $3.6 million.
Federal Secretary of State for Rural Development Buckley Belanger said the project will have a long-term impact.
“Access to reliable water infrastructure for our communities is something I care deeply about, which is why the federal government is proud to support this important project in Moosomin,” Belanger said. “This work will be essential to both public health and community development for generations to come.”
Moe said the investment reflects the province’s focus on strengthening communities.
“We are proud to support the community of Moosomin through this investment in safe, high-quality drinking water — protecting the environment and strengthening the community for future generations,” Moe said.
Moosomin Mayor Murray Gray said the plant was built with the town’s growth in mind.
“The residents of Moosomin will enjoy high-quality, safe and great-tasting water today and for years to come,” Gray said. “This system was designed to supply water to a population of up to 4,500 people, which will not inhibit our ambitious plans to grow over the life of the plant.”
The project was first announced in the spring of 2022, with construction starting the following year.
