Despite a strong effort from the defence, the University of Regina Rams extended their losing streak to three games after a 20-7 loss versus the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday night at McMahon Stadium.
The loss sees the Rams slip to 1-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the fourth-ranked Dinos improved to 4-0.
The Dinos scored 112 points in their first three games of the season. So to see the U of R hold the Dinos to only 20 points on their field was a positive for Rams head coach Steve Bryce.
He said what he found was frustrating in the loss was the the officiating.
“They took seven points off the board needlessly, along with some of the other calls and non calls,” stated Bryce following the loss. “I don’t normally beak about the refs, but that was embarrassing.”
Bryce and his players thought they had a turning-point defensive play in the third quarter after Ford picked off a Adam Sinagra pass and took it back 80 yards for a touchdown. However the refs called the play back because of an unnecessary roughness penalty during the return.
It would have been the Rams’ first pick six since 2010 and the fourth longest interception return in school history.
“It is very frustrating. I thought our defence played as good as I’ve ever seen a defence play, they gave us the ball back and gave us plenty of good field position.”
The Rams offence was shutdown by the U of C Friday night. Seb Britton completed 13 of 36 passes for 218 yards, throwing one interception and no touchdowns after replacing first-year QB Josh Donnelly.
Aldo Galvan kicked two field goals to score points for Regina, the first from 17 yards and the other from 37. He missed one earlier in the fourth quarter from 29 yards out which resulted in a single point.
Calgary collected 351 total yards to Regina’s 227.
The Rams return to action on September 28 when they visit the University of Manitoba Bisons.
