Fire Prevention Week in Saskatchewan runs from October 5th to 11th and this year’s theme serves as a reminder to pay attention to rechargeable lithium-based batteries found in our smartphones, tablets, and power tools.
“They hold an immense amount of charge, even in the smallest battery, so we’re finding when they fail or when they overload, they have quite an intense, ferocious fire,” explained Regina Fire Chief Layne Jackson.

Often, these kinds of fires are difficult to put out and Jackson reminds residents to always purchase listed-approved products with the ULC or CSA approval markings and to ensure proper charging cords are used on devices. Experts also recommend not throwing lithium-ion batteries in garbage or recycling bins due to their flammable nature. Instead, they should be sent to a safe battery recycling depot.
Families in Regina and surrounding area can learn more about Fire Prevention Week and lithium-ion batteries by attending one of two fire station open houses. The first one will be held tonight (October 8th) from 6:30 to 8:30pm at 2700 E Arens Road and a second open house is scheduled for Saturday, October 11th at 303 Rink Avenue from 1:30 to 3:30pm.
