WHITE CITY — The town of White City and RM of Edenwold have recovered most of the money lost in a fraud scheme.
In September, the two areas fell victim to a fraudster impersonating the Wastewater Authority.
The RM of Edenwold lost $497,000, while White City was defrauded of $200,000.
On Wednesday, the RM of Edenwold confirmed they’ve recovered roughly $377,376 of the $497,000 lost from relevant financial institutions.
On Friday, White City confirmed with SaskToday that the town has recaptured roughly $195,000 of the $200,000 lost.
Both areas said there had been no breach of the internal systems during the fraud scheme.
Additionally, the RM of Edenwold has taken steps to strengthen internal controls and operational procedures.
“Current staff-led training initiatives will be continued to enhance employees’ ability to identify and prevent potential instances of fraud,” said the municipality.
Meanwhile, White City has also strengthened internal controls by updating the process for reporting financial accounts at the Committee of the Whole Meetings.
Both White City and RM of Edenwold continue to work with the RCMP on the investigation, and at this time, cannot comment further regarding the recovery of the funds.
