PRINCE ALBERT — A 43-year-old Prince Albert man is in custody and faces charges after police say they discovered a firearm and a significant quantity of suspected crack cocaine in a parked vehicle.
The incident started at approximately 1:50 a.m. on Nov. 6 when an officer on patrol in the Crescent Heights neighbourhood of the city observed a man alone and asleep behind the wheel of a parked car. As the officer approached the vehicle to conduct a wellness check, he observed what he believed to be illicit substances in plain view inside the car.
According to police, the man woke up shortly after the officer arrived. An investigation revealed the individual was breaching court-ordered conditions of a prior release order. He was arrested without incident.
During a search of the vehicle, police found multiple bags of a substance suspected to be crack cocaine, in a bag. A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a firearm. Police say the serial number of the weapon appeared to have been tampered with.
In total, officers seized approximately 40 grams of suspected crack cocaine and the firearm.
Police charged the man with possession of a firearm, tampering with a serial number, breaching a release order, and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
He is scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Nov. 6.
