The Saskatchewan Roughriders will represent the West in the 112th Grey Cup thanks to a 24-21 win over the B.C. Lions on Saturday night. The game will go down as a classic.
In the fourth quarter, head coach Corey Mace elected to kick a 13-yard field goal with 2:40 left to move the Riders to within four points of the Lions, instead of gambling to try to tie the game. A move that quarterback Trevor Harris never doubted.
“I trust Corey Mace. He knows what he's doing, as you guys all saw. I'm sure that there were people at home saying, 'What are you doing?' And now they're like, Mace is the man.”
The Riders' offence and Harris would get the ball back on their own 34-yard line with 1:03 to go.
“I looked at the clock and thought, this is the CFL, there's plenty of time. I wasn't scared to take underneath stuff, and then in doing that, it loosened up their middle zones because they knew that we weren't afraid to do that. Then we were able to shoot it over their head on a couple of intermediates, which was pretty fun. Then Tommy Nield, option route, inside the 10, touchdown, we move on,”
Before the game, Harris raised eyebrows when he declared that he didn’t want to talk about B.C. quarterback Nathan Rourke. Instead, Harris said it’s our time.
“I know my comments were a little bit more brash than what they normally are, but I saw that Nathan kind of, on that sneak, he said, ‘it's our time, it's our time.’ I think it's our time.”
The Riders will take on Montreal in the 112th Grey Cup game on Sunday in Winnipeg.
