ESTEVAN — Members of the Estevan Police Service have arrested a couple of people on impaired driving-related charges in recent days.
The EPS says a member of the EPS Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan unit conducted a traffic stop with a male driver on Nov. 6. It resulted in his arrest for impaired driving after he failed a series of tests conducted by a drug recognition expert. The driver was lodged in cells to be released once sober.
The EPS also reports that while a patrol officer was attempting to perform a traffic stop on a vehicle Nov. 9, the female driver attempted to flee the scene on foot. She was apprehended a short distance away from the vehicle and arrested for obstruction. Through the subsequent investigation, she also refused to provide a breath sample on an approved screening device, was charged accordingly and held in custody until sober.
In other recent police news, the EPS says officers arrested a man Nov. 5 regarding several breaches of a probation order. He was processed and released and will appear in Estevan Provincial Court at a later date to speak to the charges.
The EPS received a report of an individual, who was known to the caller, trying to break into her house. Members attended but the suspect had already left the scene. The EPS says the matter remains under investigation.
Dispatch received multiple calls regarding a woman and two men going through a downtown dumpster. The subjects were no longer present when police arrived.
A mother contacted the EPS to report her daughter was missing, as the girl did not arrive home for curfew. The investigation located the youth at another residence and she was returned to the care of her family. No further issues were reported.
A man was arrested for breaching the conditions of his release. He was held in custody to be taken before a judge the following morning.
According to the Nov. 6 police report, the EPS is investigating a report of an $18,000 fraud that occurred over several days at the beginning of November.
Three youths were observed spray painting graffiti on property in the Trojan area. Police located the youths, who were subsequently arrested and charged with mischief before being released to their parents. They will appear in Estevan Provincial Court at a later date.
The EPS was called to assist with the removal of an unwanted guest from a residence. Upon police arrival, the woman left without incident.
EPS members responded to a disturbance call of adult family members having a heated argument. The EPS said nothing criminal occurred and the matter was mediated with no further police involvement.
Police conducted several curfew checks Nov. 6 on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions. Everyone checked was in compliance.
A suspicious vehicle was reported to be parked at a residence in south-central Estevan. EPS members attended and determined that the owner was assisting a relative to move their belongings into storage.
Several reports of online frauds were received by the EPS. The matters are under investigation.
The EPS received a report Nov. 7 of a single-vehicle collision in central Estevan. The vehicle sustained significant damage and was towed from the scene but no injuries were reported by EPS.
Staff at the Estevan Public Library reported two girls hiding in the library after closing time. The EPS said it is believed their behaviour was related to a TikTok challenge. Both were consequently banned from the library.
Police received a complaint Nov. 8 of a quad operating in an alley in east Estevan. The complainant indicated they could hear yelling shortly after the quad passed their residence. Members attended and located the quad parked and identified the driver a short distance away. The quad was seized as it was being operated while unregistered.
EPS members arrested and charged a 32-year-old woman with two counts of theft under $5,000 after she was determined to have stolen property from individuals known to her. She was released on an undertaking with conditions and will appear in Estevan Provincial Court at a later date to speak to the charges.
Police received a report of CPKC Rail stop arms malfunctioning on 13th Avenue. Police attended and directed traffic until CPKC Rail staff were able to make repairs.
A hit-and-run collision was reported in the Sobeys parking lot. The matter remains under investigation.
EPS members attended to a collision Nov. 9 in the 1500-block of Fourth Street. No injuries were reported but one of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene due to the damage it sustained.
A report of a break and enter at a local hotel was investigated after an individual was observed climbing in a window. Members attended, spoke with the individual and determined she was a guest who had forgotten the key to her room.
A suspicious man was observed to be sitting in a back alley in the north area. Members patrolled the area but were unable to locate the man.
Police received a report of a possible scam/fraud in which the victim received a request to accept an e-transfer and was then told to purchase a pay card to provide the caller with the numbers off the card. The e-transfer didn’t arrive and the victim had already provided the card’s details to the caller. The matter remains under investigation.
The EPS reminds the public to use caution when completing financial transactions with anyone offering to provide something for a fee. This is a frequently used tactic for scammers to obtain personal or financial information from the victim. The EPS says legitimate companies don’t use iTunes or pre-authorized credit cards purchased through members of the public to convert funds.
