It isn’t quite a typical first day of practice for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they work out for the first time ahead of Sunday’s 112th Grey Cup, where they will meet the Montreal Alouettes. Riders’ quarterback Trevor Harris is looking to win his first Grey Cup as a starting quarterback, but he says the game isn’t about him.
"I just love this team, and I think the more that you love your brothers and the more that you love each other in the locker room, I look back at my teammate back there, Sam Emlius. I want to see him hoist that cup over his head. The thing that he's gone through this year with a return from his injuries, and how hard he's fought, and how great a football player he is. I don't feel like he's gotten the respect he deserves for his name.”
Harris also reflected on the local players: "I think about Logan Ferland, Mitch Picton, Jorgen Hus, Marc Mueller, the Saskatchewan guys. I saw the joy in their faces after we won the West final and they went to the Grey Cup for the first time in the green and white. It's the first time the green and white have been in the cup for 12 years now, and so to finish the job is really what motivates me, not really anything to do with my career."
At the age of 39, he says there is no extra pressure to make the most of this appearance.
"I really don't, ever, really feel pressure. I just kind of go with the moment, play football, do what I'm supposed to do. I don't feel like I've ever had a moment that's gotten too big for me. Pressure is what you put in tires, I guess. I just kind of go out there and play ball, and I'm thankful for my teammates, honestly."
