WINNIPEG — All season long, the Saskatchewan Roughriders claimed they had a singular goal for their campaign: find a way to win the Grey Cup.
They went through as many ups and downs as a team can go through, but regardless of the situation, the victories continued to add up.
And now, they’ve won the biggest game of them all.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are the 2025 Grey Cup champions.
The Roughriders held on for a 25-17 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th edition of the Canadian Football League championship game, winning their first Grey Cup title since 2013.
Trevor Harris was named the Grey Cup Most Outstanding Player after putting together a career-defining performance, completing 23-of-27 passes for 302 yards as Saskatchewan built a 25-7 lead early in the third quarter.
Samuel Emilus took Grey Cup Most Outstanding Canadian honours after hauling in 10 passes for 108 yards.
Montreal got off to an early lead on a Shea Patterson one-yard plunge with 56 seconds left in the first quarter, but Harris went to work not long after.
Big catches by Dohnte Meyers and Sam Emilus got the Roughriders into the red zone to start the second half, and Tommy Stevens would pick up his first major to tie the game with 2:55 gone in the second quarter.
After holding Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander scoreless on the next drive, Harris put together a surgical 11-play, 92-yard series that would end with A.J. Ouellette running in from four yards out for a 15-7 Riders lead with 2:36 to play in the half.
That’s where things would sit at the break, and the Riders wasted little time extending their edge to open the third quarter. Tommy Nield hauled in a 34-yard catch to get down to the one, and Stevens finished things off with the goalline plunge to make it a 22-7 contest three minutes into the half.
Brett Lauther connected on a 48-yard field goal with 4:03 remaining in the quarter, and Saskatchewan had their 25-7 lead.
Alexander rallied the troops on Montreal’s next possession, and Stevie Scott III would score on an 11-yard run on the final play of the third quarter to make it a two-score game.
A 23-yard field goal by Jose Carlos Maltos would get the Alouettes to within a touchdown midway through the third quarter, and on their next drive, Saskatchewan would come up with the biggest defensive play of the game.
With the Alouettes at first and goal from the Riders four, Tevaughn Campbell and Jameer Thurman would combine to strip the ball from Patterson on a run to the left, and Marcus Sayles would pounce on the loose ball on the goalline to prevent Montreal from picking up any points.
Alexander played the game with an ailing hamstring and reaggravated the injury as he attempted to engineer a game-tying drive in the last 57 seconds.
As he had all game, Alexander would gut it out and It all came down to a 56-yard hail mary on the final play of the night. The ball would find nothing but Green and White hands, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders were the 2025 Grey Cup champions.
Be sure to check back for much much more later tonight and in the coming days.
