ESTEVAN — A man who is facing numerous charges from a home invasion in Estevan in November 2023 has been denied bail.
Billie John David Bertram had a show-cause hearing on Nov. 17 in Estevan Provincial Court. The hearing came several weeks after Bertram was arrested in Alberta while on warrants connected to the incident and others.
After both sides presented their arguments at the bail hearing, Judge Mitch Miller ruled against bail.
The evidence presented at the hearing and the reasons for Miller’s decision are protected by a publication ban.
Bertram is scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 1, when a trial date is expected to be set.
Background: Bertram has been facing charges of forcible confinement, aggravated assault and uttering threats against two people, along with a charge of possession of property obtained by crime, stemming from the November 2023 incident.
According to a press release from the Estevan Police Service, members were dispatched to a residence in response to an assault in which two victims sustained significant injuries that required medical attention. During the investigation, four suspects were identified and subsequently arrested without incident.
Following the arrests, investigators obtained search warrants for several residences in Estevan to locate offence-related property.
One of the co-accused in the 2023 incident, Nathan Charles Mangaard, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison earlier this year. Another co-accused, Bradley Williams, also pleaded guilty and was sentenced Nov. 3 to 21 months in custody and two years probation.
Charges against a fourth person were stayed after the man died in January 2024.
Bertram had been living and working in Alberta until his arrest in late September. He was then brought back to Estevan to answer to the charges.
