It took a whole team effort to earn the Saskatchewan Roughriders their fifth Grey Cup championship in franchise history with a 25-17 win over Montreal on Sunday. Defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr. was a player whose versatility allowed the Riders' defence to flourish. AND winning isn’t new to Brooks.
"To be a Super Bowl and Grey Cup champion, to be both is actually a blessing. You'll never know what God is gonna bless you.”
The Riders' coaching staff challenged the versatile Brooks to play multiple positions, including linebacker, defensive back, and even running back at one point. That versatility is a source of pride for him.
"Man, it means a lot. My dad always wanted people to see the full potential of my football ability, and I think that happened with this team. I kept hearing the same message: Stay patient. You'll be alright. Trust me. You'll be good. When you come out, you'll pop out. I'm just glad I got to help my brothers get here and to this point."
Despite his ability to play multiple positions, there is a limitation. Trevor Harris is unlikely to let him try out for quarterback next year.
(Laughing) "I don't want to, man."
The Riders will hold their parade in Regina today. The Grey Cup procession will begin at 2 p.m. and make its way down Albert Street, starting at the Green Mile.
