LLOYDMINSTER — Madison Paddy-Jimmy, 25, of Thunderchild First Nation, appeared in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Nov. 13. She was remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 18.
Paddy-Jimmy is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Tonio Cantell, 28, of Island Lake First Nation.
Cantell was one of three men found dead at a rural property near Turtleford on Nov. 5. Turtleford RCMP said they received a report of three people injured at approximately 12:30 p.m. that day. Officers found the three men with serious injuries and attempted life-saving measures, but EMS who attended the scene declared all three men dead.
Paddy-Jimmy was arrested in Turtleford later that same day. RCMP haven’t released the names of the other two victims, and she is currently charged only with Cantell’s death.
Cantell had a lengthy criminal history. In 2022, Pierceland RCMP issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest after he went unlawfully at large while on statutory release from prison.
Parole documents describe his involvement in a gang-related shooting incident where he handed a firearm to another gang member, who then fired shots at a rival gang member's home. The incident led to a high-speed police pursuit involving multiple vehicles. The vehicle drove over a spike belt and between two police vehicles, nearly hitting two officers outside of their vehicles. A third police vehicle was able to stop the vehicle by ramming it. RCMP then arrested Cantell and several gang associates. A firearm was later recovered in the area.
According to parole documents, Cantell joined a street gang in his early twenties, saying he was “beat into the gang.” He later claimed he was “beat out” of the gang. He also told officials that he was assaulted with a machete for wearing the wrong colours.
Court records reveal that on Aug. 21, Cantell had a bail hearing scheduled in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on a charge of pointing a firearm at a person. A stay of proceedings was entered that day, however, and he was released.
