REGINA — Prairie Valley School Division Board of Education chair, Janet Kotylak, has been awarded the Award of Distinction by the Saskatchewan School Boards Association (SSBA), recognizing her decades of service to public education in rural Saskatchewan.
The award was presented at the SSBA’s annual general meeting in Regina, where school board members and education leaders from across the province gathered to celebrate excellence in governance and leadership. The Award of Distinction is one of the Association’s highest honours, reserved for board members who have demonstrated outstanding service and made significant contributions to enhance education both at the local and provincial level.
Her colleagues, the Prairie Valley Board of Education, nominated Kotylak to recognize her work and achievements in Saskatchewan’s education sector.
“Janet’s ongoing dedication to ensuring public voice in publicly funded education has led to her influencing decisions at both the local and provincial level,” said Terry Berglund, vice chair, Prairie Valley Board of Education.
“Janet’s strong work ethic, unwavering values and dedication to students and families reflect her profound commitment to learning and clearly illustrate why she is deserving of the Award of Distinction.”
Kotylak has served as a local board member and division board member collectively for 28 years, including 13 years as board chair. Under her leadership, the division has navigated significant changes in education funding, rural school sustainability, and student well-being initiatives while committing to community voice through School Community Councils. Janet has been instrumental in ensuring that the unique challenges and strengths of rural schools are heard at the provincial level.
“I am honoured to receive this award, and I am grateful for the unconditional support of my family, without which I would not be here tonight,” shared Kotylak.
“I am humbled by the nomination from my Board colleagues and grateful to board members and staff throughout the province who have all contributed to my success.
