REGINA — A local holiday tradition is returning for its fifth year, raising both spirits and meals for families across the city. Community Lager — a collaborative effort between Pile O’ Bones Brewing Co., Leopold’s Tavern and Victoria’s Tavern — launches again on Dec. 5, with this year’s campaign aiming to add another 100,000 meals to support the Regina Food Bank.
What began as a small idea to harness community support to fight hunger has grown into a major annual effort. Since its inception, Community Lager has raised 369,045 meals for local families.
“As a locally grown company, community has always been the foundation of who we are,” said Michael Ash, vice president & chief brand officer at Leo’s Group. “The Regina Food Bank is a pillar in this city supporting families, creating stability and ensuring dignity for thousands of people facing food insecurity. Community Lager is our way of standing alongside that mission.”
Glenn Valgardson with Pile O’ Bones Brewing Co. noted how far the campaign has come.
“This campaign started as a simple idea to do something to help food insecurity right here in Regina. Now Community Lager has grown into a community’s favourite, giving people a way to enjoy great beer while helping our neighbours with every cheers,” said Valgardson.
The Regina Food Bank continues to face record need, feeding 17,000 people each month and distributing nearly 340,000 pounds of food. CEO John Bailey emphasized the importance of the campaign’s impact during the holidays.
“Five years in, Community Lager continues to show Regina at its best,” said Bailey. “This holiday season we will distribute an additional 2,500 holiday hampers and this campaign helps us feed everyone, especially during the winter months, when donations tend to slow down. Community Lager is a prime example of local business leaders deciding to come together to give back to the community.”
Each pint of Community Lager provides 24 meals, and each four-pack provides 33 meals for a family in need.
The seasonal release will be available on tap on Dec. 5 at Victoria’s Tavern, Leopold’s Tavern and Pile O’ Bones Brewing Co. Cans will arrive at Sobey’s Liquor Stores across Regina on Dec. 12, while quantities last.
The Regina Food Bank says community support is vital as the holidays approach, noting that the campaign reflects the values of generosity, connection and supporting neighbours.
“As Regina continues to come together during the holidays, Community Lager remains a reminder of what this season is all about—generosity, connection and lifting each other up,” the release said.
