REGINA — A Regina gala, slated for Dec. 7 at the Regina 55+ Community Centre, is aiming to provide education and support to Pakistani youth.
The gala is being run by The Citizens of Foundation Group (TCF), which builds schools in the country.
“They build purpose-built schools in the areas where there are underprivileged children, like in rural areas, also in urban areas where there are slums and access to education is limited. So those are areas that have been chosen by the organization,” said Haji Chalchal, organizer of the gala.
Chalchal explained that these schools provide the same education as any institution. Students are also provided with filtered water and a playground area.
These schools are essential, as Chalchal said, roughly 16 million Pakistani students cannot access education.
“A majority of these people are girls, and lots of them are boys as well.”
According to their website, TCF says it costs $430,000 to construct and support a school for 180 students with 8-10 teachers.
Since the gala’s inception in 2011, Chalchal says over $1 million has been raised in this effort.
“People see this as an opportunity to have the highest impact for the dollars that they donate,” said Chalchal.
The gala will take place this Sunday at the Regina 55+ Community Centre from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.
