Environment Canada says September 2019 goes into the record books as one of the wettest on record in southern Saskatchewan.
Meteorologist Terri Lang explained how Regina had more than double the average rainfall, receiving 78.5 millimetres. The average is 32.8 millimetres.
“That came in the ninth wettest out of 144 years on record, so pretty notably wet,” said Lang.
Estevan was the wettest spot at 160 millimeters, over four times the normal amount for September. It turned out to be the city’s second wettest September ever.
Saskatoon had 12 per cent more moisture than normal in September.
Moose Jaw and Swift Current had three times the average moisture with Moose Jaw receiving 111 millimeters and Swift Current 101 millimeters. Yorkton had 19 per cent higher than usual rain in September.
Lang explained how it was linked to the jet stream.
“We saw a lot of weather systems coming through Montana and North Dakota, and when they do that, the southeast corner in particular gets clipped,” she noted. “It got clipped by a couple of systems, and then that snow storm came through and that kind of topped off everything there.”
Temperatures in Regina were slightly above normal last month.
