Lending a helping hand whether by volunteering your time or donating money does make a difference in our lives. The sense of giving should come from a desire to help others. As you drive past a snow covered walk way, have you considered the homeowner might not be able to shovel snow. Long grass in a yard might be because the owner cannot afford to buy the gas for the lawnmower nor an extension cord to run it. Your side of the deliberation might be; do I offer to help or just complain about the state of the yard. A quick stop to shovel the walk or offering to help with lawncare will not only boost your mood, but listening to who you are helping gives you insight into why they are in the predicament. Is it a loss of a job, depression, loneliness. What has derailed their routines, ones we take for granted.
Souls Harbour Rescue Mission in Regina serves people that may struggle with such things by offering programming for women with addictions, they offer shelter for men, clothing for those in need. Their 5 day a week meal program serves a range of three hundred to six hundred people. Christmas and Easter as well as Thanksgiving are the times that the meal attendee numbers go up. With that the need for supplies also increases. How can you help? It is easy.
Soul’s Harbour will be looking at that high number of attendees to be fed on December 23rd. The need for frozen veggies, pies and turkey is high. Whether it is a one time financial donation or a monthly contribution, you are ensuring that people are able to get back on their feet, have a nutritious meal for their family and enjoy some time of community.
The staff at Soul’s Harbour have been kept busy in these trying times for Canadians. Their programming is full and the staff are always offering a hand in the departments they cover off. Presently, a phone campaign is looking for sponsors of the 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff. The event will take place in February, information is available at the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission website. Government funding is not apart of their model. 620 CKRM has been on location helping to promote the positive things that this organization has done for the last 35 years. And they are excited to continue this trend for the future.
Thank you for your support. Every dollar, turkey, box of stuffing or bag of potatos make a difference.
