ESTEVAN — A traffic stop in Estevan on Dec. 14 resulted in multiple charges, including drug-impaired driving.
According to information from the Estevan Police Service (EPS), patrol members suspected illicit drugs were present in the vehicle. Police service dog Max was used to search the exterior of the vehicle and alerted officers to the presence of illicit substances.
The two occupants were arrested and the EPS said a search of the vehicle located methamphetamine and unknown pharmaceutical pills. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for being in possession of illicit drugs, and following an evaluation by a drug recognition expert (DRE), for impaired driving. The EPS said additional charges include breaching a probation order and trespassing by night.
No further details were immediately released.
In other recent police news, members attended to an elementary school Dec. 11 for a presentation to students on sexting.
An investigation into an ongoing criminal harassment complaint led to an individual being charged and released on conditions imposed by a justice of the peace. He will appear in Estevan Provincial Court at a later date.
Police conducted a compliance check on a woman with a court-ordered curfew. She was found to be at home and complying with her orders.
A traffic stop Dec. 13 resulted in police observing a motorist displaying signs of impairment by drug. The EPS said standardized field sobriety tests were conducted and the EPS said the driver performed poorly. He was subsequently arrested for impaired driving and subjected to evaluation by a drug recognition expert, which the EPS said he also failed. Upon completion of the psychophysical tests, the EPS said the driver refused to provide a sample of his urine for analysis and as a result was charged with refusing to provide a sample as required. He will make his first appearance in Estevan Provincial Court at a later date.
High-visibility enforcement check stops were in place during the Dec. 13 night shift to detect and deter impaired drivers. More than 120 vehicles were checked and found to have sober drivers.
EPS members responded to three separate noise complaints. Warnings under the city's noise bylaw were issued in each occurrence.
A Dec. 14 report of three suspicious vehicles parked in an alley in the Centennial area was received by EPS. Members attended to the location but the vehicles had left the scene prior to arrival.
