Update: SASKATCHEWAN — A blizzard warning has been issued for the cities of Regina and Saskatoon and other parts of Saskatchewan.
The warning also covers the city of Moose Jaw and communities within 192 RMs.
“A strong Alberta clipper will bring heavy snow and strong, gusty winds, leading to blizzard conditions over portions of southern Saskatchewan beginning Wednesday morning [Dec. 17],” the warning states.
Snowfall accumulations of 10-20 centimetres are expected. Environment Canada calls for gusty winds and visibility frequently near zero in snow and blowing snow.
There is also a risk of freezing rain throughout the day, extending from Leader and Kindersley, southeast towards Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Regina, Estevan and Broadview.
Conditions will begin to deteriorate quickly in the morning of Dec. 17 as accumulating snow occurs in conjunction with strengthening winds.
Blizzard conditions should begin to ease during the night.
“Travel will be dangerous and likely impossible due to near-zero visibility. Road closures are possible,” the warning states.
The winter storm watch that was in effect for areas with a blizzard warning has been lifted, but it remains in effect for many communities south of Highway 1, including Estevan, Weyburn, Carlyle and Assiniboia.
A flash freeze warning that was issued early on Dec. 16 for much of Saskatchewan has been lifted, as has a wind warning that was issued on Dec. 15.
